This question comes from Valerie Mullins from In Sync writing:
Question: Can I build a blog using my existing website?
Answer:
You certainly can!
A blog can be added to an existing website. Before starting the project, however, make sure to take into consideration factors such as branding, the intended use of the blog, and goals related to search engine optimization (SEO).
A blog connected to your website via a new directory created on your server (insyncwriting.com/blog or blog.insyncwriting.com) would work well for branding and extending the focus of your site . If you want to be identified as an independent resource or advertise a particular service, product or book, using a unique URL might be a better option. Using a unique address works well for creating a conversation around a niche topic or targeting a sub-group of readers. If you wanted to limit your blogging to copyrighting or press releases, for example, a separate URL could be quite effective. A niche blog is also a great way to attract those at the tail of the economic curve (people who have a specific interest in something related to your services) as opposed to the head, where you are marketing your services to a larger audience.
With respect to SEO, adding a blog to your existing website will improve search engine rankings, while at the same time making your site more available for incoming links. If your blog is using a separate domain name, it might take longer for search engines to rank your new site organically. A potential solution is the creation of a link to your blog from your website. This will create a trustworthy, high quality inbound link. An important factor in SEO is the relevance of the domain name to the service or product provided; therefore, your unique url address can incorporate keywords that readers might use to find your services.
If the first option seems more in line with your objectives, I would recommend thinking about creating a site that integrates the features of a blog and a website. This option is becoming extremely popular these days, as it offers the best of both worlds.
